Sur les traces de Cézanne et de Vasarely, on prendra un Ouigo (départ de Paris Marne-la-Vallée ou de Paris Gare de Lyon) pour arriver en 3 heures à Aix-en-Provence TGV. Vous comprendrez d’ici quelques lignes le pourquoi de cette destination 😉

 

Pour rejoindre le centre de ville d’Aix, un petit coup de bus suffit (si vous comptez faire l’aller-retour, prenez un billet aller-retour pour payer moins cher). Je vous conseille ensuite de passer par l’Office de Tourisme pour prendre un plan de la ville et réserver votre visite de l’Atelier de Cézanne (réservation sur internet aussi possible).

La visite de l’Atelier se réalise par groupe de 30 personnes maxi et à certains horaires, c’est rapidement complet. Préférez une visite guidée, pour en apprendre ainsi un peu plus sur Cézanne. Je ne vous en dis pas plus …mais il y a quelques anecdotes surprenantes.

Rejoignez ensuite à pieds ou en voiture le point de vue sur la montagne Sainte-Victoire ( qui culmine à 1101 m), une source d’inspiration pour notre célèbre peintre. En ville, vous trouverez un circuit pédestre sur les pas de Cézanne (visite en suivant les clous estampillés « C » au sol) qui passe notamment par sa maison natale. Enfin, pour clore le chapitre, l’incontournable Musée Granet (2 sites, le musée et la chapelle) vous permettra de découvrir quelques unes de ses toiles, mais aussi des œuvres de Picasso, Nicolas de Staël, Planque, …

 

Direction ensuite la fondation Vasarely (qui est à l’extérieur de la ville, prendre le bus 02 si vous ne voulez pas marcher 30-45 mns). Après le succès de l’exposition Vasarely qui s’est tenue à Paris, au Centre Pompidou, en début d’année, un passage par sa fondation me semble obligatoire. Vous serez « bluffé » par l’architecture  du bâtiment et amusé par son lac miroir. A l’intérieur, des œuvres monumentales de 8 mètres de hauteur … pas toujours en bon état, hélas. La fondation a été à une époque laissée à l’abandon. On apprend (et on constate) aussi que certaines œuvres ont été vandalisées. D’ailleurs, quelques unes sont en restauration. La fondation vaut vraiment le détour pour les amateurs d’art graphique.

Aix est une ville assez chère en hôtellerie. Vous trouverez  néanmoins des appartements bon marché et bien situés sur Booking. Je vous conseille, par exemple, l’appartement situé rue d’Italie. Bien placé, près de la Cours Mirabeau ; d’ailleurs dans cette même rue, au numéro 45, je vous recommande la boulangerie Jacob’s, une bonne adresse d’Adrienout.

Pour les restaurants également, ce n’est pas vraiment bon marché. Le soir, posez-vous à un bar à tapas, ou allez à Piacere, 4 rue des Bernardines, des produits frais pour un prix défiant toute concurrence.

Le marché du Samedi vous permettra aussi de vous sustenter avec des produits locaux. Je vous invite à tester le Brunch du samedi midi à la Cité du Livre. Dans ce quartier, n’hésitez pas à faire un tour du côté du Pavillon noir, du conservatoire Darius Milhaud et du Grand Théâtre de Provence. C’est le quartier moderne d’Aix situé au Sud-Ouest.

Le centre ville historique est plus que charmant avec ses fontaines, ses églises, sa cathédrale, ses jardins (notamment celui du Pavillon de Vendôme), ses rues escarpées. Il y fait vraiment bon flâner. La ville se fait principalement à pieds. Je n’ai pas eu le temps de profiter des thermes, un institut de bien-être situé à l’emplacement des anciens thermes romain de Sextius. Qui dit thermes, dit Casino, ce dernier est situé à l’extérieur de la ville.

Aix est une ville dynamique, qui mise notamment sur le Tourisme et la Culture. Lors de mon week-end, j’ai ainsi pu profiter des « Rencontres du 9ème Art », festival de bande dessinée et arts associés, avec des expositions un peu partout dans la ville. Certaines sont vraiment extra, en particulier, Haircut Football Club, une parodie sur les joueurs de football de toutes les époques, et celle sur Andy Warhol by Typex.

Aix, j’adore. Une ville historique et moderne, attachante et charmante.

In the footsteps of Cézanne and Vasarely, take a Ouigo (departure from Paris Marne-la-Vallée or Paris Gare de Lyon) to arrive in 3 hours to Aix-en-Provence TGV. You will understand in a few lines the why of this destination 😉
 
To reach the city center of Aix, a small bus ride is enough (if you plan to make the round trip, take a return ticket to pay less). Then I advise you to go through the Tourist Office to take a map of the city and book your visit to the Atelier de Cézanne (booking on the internet also possible).
 
The visit of the Workshop is realized by group of 30 maximum people and at certain times, it is quickly complete. Prefer a guided tour, to learn a little more about Cezanne. I do not tell you more … but there are some surprising anecdotes.
Then walk or drive to the viewpoint of the Sainte-Victoire mountain (which rises to 1101 m), a source of inspiration for our famous painter. In town, you will find a pedestrian circuit in the footsteps of Cézanne (visit following the nails stamped « C » on the ground) which passes through his birthplace. Finally, to close the chapter, the inevitable Museum Granet (2 sites, the museum and the chapel) will allow you to discover some of his paintings, but also works by Picasso, Nicolas de Stael, Planque, …
 
Then go to the Vasarely Foundation (which is outside the city, take bus 02 if you do not want to walk 30-45 mins). After the success of the exhibition Vasarely held in Paris, at the Center Pompidou, at the beginning of the year, a passage through its foundation seems obligatory. You will be « blown away » by the architecture of the building and amused by its mirror lake. Inside, monumental works of 8 meters high … not always in good condition, alas. The foundation was once abandoned. We also learn (and see) that some works have been vandalized. Moreover, some are in restoration. The foundation is definitely worth the detour for graphic art lovers.
 
Aix is ​​a rather expensive city in the hotel industry. Nevertheless you will find cheap apartments and well located on Booking. I recommend for example, the apartment located rue d’Italie. Well placed near Cours Mirabeau; moreover in this same street, at number 45, I recommend Jacob’s bakery, a good address for Adrienout.
 
For restaurants too, it’s not really cheap. In the evening, ask at a tapas bar, or go to Piacere, 4 rue des Bernardines, fresh produce for a price unbeatable.
The market Saturday will also allow you to susten with local products. I invite you to test the Saturday lunchtime brunch at the Cité du Livre. In this district, do not hesitate to visit the Black Pavilion, the Darius Milhaud Conservatory and the Grand Théâtre de Provence. This is the modern district of Aix located in the South West.
 
The historic city center is more than charming with its fountains, churches, cathedral, gardens (including the Pavillon de Vendôme), its steep streets. It is really good to hang out there. The city is mainly on foot. I did not have time to enjoy the thermal baths, a wellness institute located on the site of the ancient Roman baths of Sextius. Who says baths, says Casino, the latter is located outside the city.
 
Aix is ​​a dynamic city, which places particular emphasis on Tourism and Culture. During my week-end, I was able to enjoy the « Rencontres du 9ème Art », a comic strip and related arts festival, with exhibitions all over the city. Some are really great, in particular, Haircut Football Club, a parody on football players of all times, and the one on Andy Warhol by Typex.
