KODALINE EN CONCERT

Ce mardi, au Bataclan, se tenait le dernier concert en France de la tournée européenne du quatuor dublinois Kodaline. Le groupe s’est fait connaître il y a près d’une dizaine d’années lors de la sortie de leur premier album, In a perfect world (2013), avec le titre « All I Want ». De retour dans la capitale, à l’occasion de la promotion de leur cinquième album Our Roots Run Deep qui reprend en live acoustique leurs plus grands titres, et après deux ans de pandémie, le concert n’était pas loin d’être « sold out – complet ».

Le public se veut plutôt jeune (25/35 ans). Quant au décor, il reprend assez fidèlement celui de la pochette du nouvel album. De prime abord assez épuré, les habiles jeux de lumières et changements de couleurs donneront à la scène un charme fou. L’ambiance, feutrée, intimiste, est chaleureuse. On a très vite cette agréable impression de se retrouver entre potes, heureux de se revoir après une trop longue absence. C’est d’ailleurs avec le titre Wherever you are, une balade entraînante évoquant les êtres chers qui nous manquent, que le groupe d’amis ouvre le concert. Ici, point de chansons engagées, Kodaline c’est des tranches de vie qui nous ressemblent : déception amoureuse, dépassement de soi, amour fraternel, deuil, rêves et espoirs … la vie et son cortège d’émotions, à la fois si personnelle et terriblement universelle. Voilà ce qui fait la force de ce groupe : outre l’indéniable talent de ses interprètes (le timbre de voix de Steve Garrigan n’y est pas étranger 😉), sa sincérité, et ses mélodies bien ficelées.

La formation, principalement acoustique, est accompagnée du violoncelliste David Doyle et du claviériste David Prendergast. Le groupe entonnera à l’unisson, dans une belle harmonie vocale, les compositions les plus marquantes de leur répertoire pop-rock comme Ready ou Brother.

L’union avec son public est parfaite. Ce dernier reprendra en cœur moultes refrains entraînants (Sometimes) voire carrément entêtants comme ceux de High Hopes, et bien sûr, l’incontournable All I want, morceau très cinématographique puisque utilisé plusieurs fois à l’écran notamment dans la jolie love story Nos étoiles contraires ou en générique de fin du film Boomerang, avec Laurent Lafitte et Mélanie Laurent.

Love Like This ravira les amateurs de son plus folkavec ses quelques notes d’harmonica.

A noter les reprises de Billie Jean de Michael Jackson et de Bring It On Home to me de Sam Cooke. Ces titres cultes sont complètement revisités, dans un registre sensiblement différent des versions originales.

Vous l’aurez compris. J’ai été conquis par la prestation de Kodaline ! Je vous invite donc fissa à découvrir sur scène les mélodies de ce sympathique groupe formé de Steve Garrigan (chant, piano, guitare), Mark Prendergast (guitare, piano), Jason Boland (basse) et Vinny May (batterie, percussions). Ou à foncer sur les plateformes de streaming musical m’écouter tout ça 😉.

This Tuesday, at the Bataclan, was held the last concert in France of the European tour of the Dublin quartet Kodaline. The group became known almost ten years ago when they released their first album, In a perfect world (2013), with the title “All I Want”. Back in the capital, on the occasion of the promotion of their fifth album Our Roots Run Deep which covers their greatest titles live acoustically, and after two years of pandemic, the concert was not far from being « sold out ».

The public is rather young (25/35 years old). As for the decor, it fairly faithfully reproduces that of the cover of the new album. Quite uncluttered at first sight, the skilful play of lights and color changes will give the scene an incredible charm. The atmosphere, cozy, intimate, is warm. We very quickly have this pleasant impression of being among friends, happy to see each other again after too long an absence. It is also with the title Wherever you are, a catchy ballad evoking the loved ones we miss, that the group of friends opens the concert. Here, no committed songs, Kodaline is slices of life that look like us: disappointment in love, self-transcendence, brotherly love, mourning, dreams and hopes… life and its procession of emotions, both so personal and terribly universal. This is what makes the strength of this group: in addition to the undeniable talent of its performers (Steve Garrigan’s voice timbre is no stranger to it 😉), its sincerity, and its well-crafted melodies.

The formation, mainly acoustic, is accompanied by cellist David Doyle and keyboardist David Prendergast. The group will sing in unison, in a beautiful vocal harmony, the most striking compositions of their pop-rock repertoire such as Ready or Brother.

The union with his audience is perfect. The latter will take up many catchy refrains (Sometimes) or downright heady like those of High Hopes, and of course, the essential All I want, a very cinematographic piece since used several times on the screen in particular in the pretty love story Our stars opposites or in the end credits of the film Boomerang, with Laurent Lafitte and Mélanie Laurent.

Love Like This will delight lovers of a more folk sound with its few harmonica notes.

Note the covers of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson and Bring It On Home to me by Sam Cooke. These cult titles are completely revisited, in a significantly different register from the original versions.

You would have understood it. I was won over by Kodaline’s performance! I therefore invite you to discover fast on stage the melodies of this friendly group formed by Steve Garrigan (vocals, piano, guitar), Mark Prendergast (guitar, piano), Jason Boland (bass) and Vinny May (drums, percussion). Or to rush on music streaming platforms to listen to all this 😉.

KODALINE AU BATACLAN MARDI 22 NOVEMBRE

Ce mardi, je vous donne rendez-vous au Bataclan pour Kodaline et leur album « Our Roots Run Deep ». Une bonne alternative au premier match de l’équipe de France de la coupe du monde au Qatar tant décriée ! 😉

On pourra redécouvrir tous leurs hits aux sonorités pop-rock. « Cet album est quelque chose que nous voulions faire depuis très longtemps, mais c’est aussi quelque chose d’entièrement nouveau pour nous« , a déclaré le groupe dans une déclaration collective. « Il s’agit d’un spectacle acoustique dépouillé, sans clics, ce qui signifie essentiellement qu’il est très brut et non filtré. C’était un spectacle intime enregistré dans l’une de nos salles préférées au monde, à Dublin, chez nous en Irlande. Nous espérons que vous l’apprécierez autant que nous avons pris plaisir à le jouer. »

Un retour aux sources dans cette salle historique.

This Tuesday, I’ll meet you at the Bataclan for Kodaline and their album « Our Roots Run Deep ». A good alternative to the French team’s first match of the much-maligned World Cup in Qatar! 😉

We can rediscover all their hits with pop-rock sounds. « This album is something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time, but it’s also something entirely new to us, » the band said in a collective statement. “It’s a stripped-down acoustic show with no clicks, which basically means it’s very raw and unfiltered. It was an intimate show recorded in one of our favorite venues in the world, in Dublin, at home in Ireland. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed playing it. » A return to basics in this historic room.

Adrienout au Lollapalooza Paris 2019 (1/2)

Le samedi.

On est enfin le 20 juillet. Je suis impatient de découvrir le Lollapalooza, festival itinérant de réputation mondiale. Pour sa troisième édition sur Paris, la programmation du samedi est « terrible » : Kodaline, IAM, Twenty One Pilots, Metric, Jain, Orelsan, Martin Garrix, pour ne citer que les plus connus.

J’arrive par le métro ligne 10 station Boulogne Jean Jaurès, puis je rejoins l’hippodrome ParisLongchamp à pieds (comptez environ 30 mns). Je connais bien l’endroit. L‘année dernière,  j’ai assisté à l’inauguration du nouvel hippodrome, avec un concert de The Avener. Quand j’habitais à Issy-les-Moulineaux, je m’entrainais à vélo sur la boucle de Longchamp.

Sur le coup des 15h30, me voici à l’entrée. Bonne surprise, c’est fluide, il n’y a pas trop d’attente. Le personnel est efficace et sympathique.
Ma première impression en pénétrant sur les lieux : c’est immense. Le site s’étend sur 5 hectares. Les deux principales scènes (Main Stage 1 et 2) sont situées à gauche de l’entrée (elles sont l’une à côté de l’autre, c’est pratique). Les deux autres (Alternative Stage et Perry’s Stage)sont à droite. Il y aussi le village Greenroom : des petites cabanes pouvant contenir 20 à 30 personnes, où des DJ s’y produisent, ambiance night club. La taille du site fait que je ne pourrai pas tout voir. J’ai ciblé essentiellement les Main Stage.

Le temps est couvert. Une petite averse nous rafraîchit vers 16h00.

 

Le Lolla, ceux ne sont pas seulement des concerts, mais aussi un grand nombre de distractions sponsorisées le plus souvent par des entreprises ou associations partenaires.
J’ai ainsi testé l’Ice Bar by JOOT, la marque de doudoune. Une expérience givrée : on enfile une doudoune pour rentrer dans un bar en glace. Une collation est servie dans un verre en glace, attention ça glisse ! Une salle de jeux d’Arcade est à disposition des festivaliers. C’est l’occasion de se poser un peu  et de retourner dans le passé.

 

SEAT a créé un espace lounge façon Barcelona. COCA COLA Energy, un dance floor avec DJ dédié. Il y a aussi Air France KLM-American Express, l’électro bar, l’espace summer & milk avec des dégustations de lait aromatisé en étant assis sur une botte de paille, l’espace Lolla Planète avec 11 associations environnementales, l’espace Zippo, VANS, Truck Radar, un stand de merchandising, un espace prévention, un espace SOSH. Un espace enfant, le Kidzapalooza, que je n’ai pas testé 😉 .

Sans oublier le symbole du Lolla Paris, la Tour Eiffel, située en plein centre, qui permet de réaliser des photos improbables, avec en arrière-plan le quartier de la Défense.

Place à la musique maintenant.

 

Direction Main Stage 2 pour découvrir METRIC, un groupe de rock canadien. Une première entrée en matière agréable. Je file ensuite sur l’Alternative Stage pour SKIP THE USE. Le groupe s’est reformé avec le retour du chanteur Mat Bastard après 2 années de séparation. Les musiciens avaient continué avec THE NOFACE (identité visuelle forte : un masque noir barré d’une croix blanche) et une nouvelle chanteuse Lio que j’avais pu voir en 2017 au Cabaret Vert et en 2018 à Rock in Evreux, où j’avais d’ailleurs pu l’interviewer ( Interview THE NOFACE ). SKIP THE USE, c’est du Rock énergique. Le festival est bel et bien lancé, Mat met l’ambiance en faisant bouger le public de droite à gauche.

 

Je rejoins les Main Stage pour assister à la fin du concert des Irlandais de KODALINE et leur rock british. C’est efficace, mélodieux, j’apprécie.

 

JAIN, vêtue de sa combinaison bleue, enchaîne après. Elle était déjà au Lolla Chile 2019. Elle ravît son public, ça chante, ça danse, au son de ses tubes, notamment Alright.

 

Au tour maintenant de IAM, qui arrive masqués, ambiance garantie. Leur hip hop trône toujours au sommet de la scène française et rassemble les générations. Ambiance Marseille : « je danse le mia, pas de pacotille, chemise ouverte, chaîne en or qui brille….. ». C’est une leçon de vie, ça groove bien dans le public.

IAM nous laisse entre de bonnes mains avec ORELSAN et son rap tranchant. Réveil des festivaliers : ça saute, ça bouge. « Basique,…Simple,…..Basique,….Simple ».

 

La nuit commence à tomber, il est bientôt 22h. Tyler arrive avec une torche, ciret jaune, bonnet rouge, c’est TWENTY ONE PILOTS ! Une voiture s’enflamme sur la scène, le concert peut commencer. Ambiance de folie ! Tyler à la fois chanteur, pianiste et guitariste bassiste, et Josh batteur, percussionniste et trompettiste forment le duo. Au moment d’entamer leur tube planétaire « Stressed out » ( plus de 1.7 milliards de vues sur YouTube), comme pour ajouter de l’intensité au spectacle, une grosse averse éclate. Je gère, j’ai mon poncho 🙂 . Heureusement, la pluie ne durera pas. On aura droit à un véritable show à l’américaine, avec des tenues différentes, des masques. Josh fera un saut périlleux en arrière et exhibera sa musculature saillante. Il offrira de nombreuses baguettes au public. C’est grandiose, démentiel. Une battle de batteries apportera une touche d’humour. Ils joueront aussi au milieu des festivaliers.

 

MARTIN GARRIX clôturera cette première journée avec un concert d’électro et un show mêlant lasers et feux d’artifices.

The Saturday.
It’s finally the 20th of July. I can not wait to see Lollapalooza, a world-renowned traveling festival. For its third edition on Paris, Saturday’s programming is « terrible »: Kodaline, IAM, Twenty One Pilots, Metric, Jain, Orelsan, Martin Garrix, to name only the best known.

I arrive by metro line 10 station Boulogne Jean Jaurès, then I join the racecourse ParisLongchamp on foot (count about 30 mns). I know the place well. Last year, I attended the inauguration of the new racecourse, with a concert of The Avener. When I lived in Issy-les-Moulineaux, I practiced cycling on the Longchamp loop.
At the stroke of 15:30, here I am at the entrance. Good surprise, it’s fluid, there is not much waiting. The staff is efficient and friendly.

My first impression when entering the scene: it’s huge. The site covers 5 hectares. The two main scenes (Main Stage 1 and 2) are located to the left of the entrance (they are next to each other, it’s convenient). The other two (Alternative Stage and Perry’s Stage) are on the right. There is also the village Greenroom: small cabins that can hold 20 to 30 people, where DJs there, atmosphere night club. The size of the site is that I will not be able to see everything. I mainly targeted the Main Stage.
The weather is cloudy. A small downpour refresh us around 16:00.

Lolla, those are not only concerts, but also a large number of distractions sponsored most often by companies or associations partners.

I tested the Ice Bar by JOOT, the brand of down jacket. A frosty experience: you put on a jacket to get into an ice cream bar. A snack is served in an ice glass, beware it slips! An arcade game room is available to festival goers. This is an opportunity to ask a little and go back to the past.
SEAT has created a Barcelona-style lounge area. COCA COLA Energy, a dance floor with a dedicated DJ. There is also Air France KLM-American Express, the electro bar, the summer & milk space with tastings of flavored milk while sitting on a straw boot, the Lolla Planet space with 11 environmental associations, the space Zippo, VANS, Truck Radar, a merchandising stand, a prevention area, an SOSH space. Kidzapalooza, a kid’s space that I have not tested ;-).
Not to mention the symbol of Lolla Paris, the Eiffel Tower, located in the center, which allows for improbable photos, with in the background the district of La Défense.
Make way for music now.

Direction Main Stage 2 to discover METRIC, a Canadian rock band. A first entry in pleasant matter. I then go to the Alternative Stage for SKIP THE USE. The group reformed with the return of singer Mat Bastard after 2 years of separation. The musicians had continued with THE NOFACE (strong visual identity: a black mask crossed by a white cross) and a new Lio singer I had seen in 2017 at Green Cabaret and in 2018 at Rock in Evreux, where I had Moreover, I was able to interview him (Interview THE NOFACE). SKIP THE USE is Energetic Rock. The festival is well and truly launched, Mat sets the mood by moving the audience from right to left.
I join the Main Stage to attend the end of the KODALINE Irish concert and their British rock. It’s effective, melodious, I appreciate.

JAIN, dressed in her blue jumpsuit, goes on after. She was already at Lolla Chile 2019. She delighted her audience, it sings, it dances, to the sound of his hits, including Alright.

The turn now of IAM, which arrives masked, guaranteed atmosphere. Their hip hop always sits at the top of the French scene and brings generations together. Atmosphere Marseille: « I dance the mia, no junk, open shirt, gold chain shining … .. ». It’s a lesson in life, it grooves well in the audience.

IAM leaves us in good hands with ORELSAN and his sharp rap. Awakening festival-goers: it jumps, it moves. « Basic, … Simple, Basic ….. …. Simple ».

The night begins to fall, it is soon 22h. Tyler arrives with a torch, yellow ciret, red cap, it’s TWENTY ONE PILOTS ! A car ignites on the stage, the concert can begin. Atmosphere of madness! Tyler, a singer, pianist and bass guitarist, and Josh drummer, percussionist and trumpeter form the duo. At the time of starting their planetary tube « Stressed out » (more than 1.7 billion views on YouTube), as to add intensity to the show, a big shower explodes. I manage, I have my poncho :-). Fortunately, the rain will not last. We will have a real show in the American style, with different outfits, masks. Josh will make a somersault back and show off his jutting musculature. He will offer many chopsticks to the public. It’s grandiose, insane. A battery battle will bring a touch of humor. They will also play among festival-goers.

MARTIN GARRIX will close this first day with an electro concert and a show mixing lasers and fireworks.

Long live tomorrow. Sunday in another article. 😉
