La ligne Maginot traverse l’Alsace du nord au sud sur près de 200 kms. Vous tomberez sûrement dessus si vous vous baladez dans la région car elle aligne de nombreux blocs de béton, souvent surmontés de tourelles métalliques. C’est un peu l’équivalent des blockhaus que l’on retrouve sur le littoral du Nord de la France. La ligne Maginot est un système fortifié édifié entre 1930 et 1940 pour se prémunir d’une invasion allemande.
Situé à Hunspach, le Fort de Schoenenbourg est le plus important ouvrage visitable de la ligne Maginot en Alsace. Il était prévu pour une garnison de 600 hommes, et disposait de nombreuses installations de vie, de service et de combat, essentiellement souterrains sous 30 m (pour la visite, prévoyez un pull, il y fait 13-14 degrés). Tout était prévu pour y vivre et pouvoir y rester 3 mois en totale autonomie. Ce fut pendant la seconde guerre mondiale une forteresse imprenable, les Allemands s’y sont « cassés les dents » jusqu’à ce que l’armistice de 1940 fut signé.
Niché dans un petit bout de forêt, le Fort ne paie pas de mine à la première impression, ça ressemble à un gros blockhaus. On est loin d’imaginer la suite…A l’entrée, un escalier vous attend pour un voyage dans le passé, sous terre. On est très vite pris d’émotions quand on voit la plaque commémorative d’un ouvrier qui s’est tué sur le chantier de l’ouvrage en tombant dans le puit d’ascenceur de l’entrée des munitions. Il faudra suivre le parcours dans l’ordre pour tout voir. Comptez 2-3 heures pour visiter tous les blocs. Le parcours est très didactique, on y apprend beaucoup de choses, de nombreuses anecdotes, affiches et pages de journaux sont là pour nous plonger dans la vie d’un soldat. Les consignes de sécurité de l’époque sont aussi assez « amusantes » et anachroniques. J’ai été bluffé par les très longues galeries (comptez 15 mns de marche pour rallier l’entrée à la fin du parcours) et l’artillerie très sophistiquée avec le système des tourelles.
D’ailleurs, n’oubliez pas de passer voir les tourelles, en extérieur, après la visite du Fort. Vous repartirez par la gauche en voiture, puis à gauche et encore à gauche.

It is somewhat the equivalent of the blockhouses that can be found on the coast of northern France. The Maginot Line is a fortified system built between 1930 and 1940 to guard against a invasion.

Everything was planned to live there and be able to stay there for 3 months in total autonomy. It was during the Second World War an impregnable fortress, the Germans « broke their teeth » there until the armistice of 1940 was signed.
Nestled in a small piece of forest, the Fort does not look very attractive at first impression, it looks like a big blockhouse. We are far from imagining the rest … At the entrance, a staircase awaits you for a journey into the past, underground. We are quickly overcome with emotions when we see the commemorative plaque of a worker who was killed on the construction site by falling into the elevator shaft of the munitions entrance. You will have to follow the course in order to see everything. Allow 2-3 hours to visit all the blocks. The course is very educational, we learn a lot of things, many anecdotes, posters and newspaper pages are there to immerse us in the life of a soldier. The safety instructions of the time are also quite « amusing » and anachronistic. I was amazed by the very long galleries (allow 15 minutes to walk to reach the entrance at the end of the route) and the very sophisticated artillery with the turret system.
Moreover, do not forget to visit the turrets, outside, after visiting the Fort. You will leave by car on the left, then on the left and again on the left.
