J’ai découvert Gand lors d’un après-midi. J’y suis allé en voiture avec mon père et ma compagne. Gand est desservie par l’autoroute, c’est facile d’accès et n’oubliez pas, pas de péage en Belgique. Pour se garer, ne visez pas le centre-ville, mais garez-vous à la périphérie, ce sera plus facile et gratuit. Un peu de marche, ça ne fait pas de mal, surtout que Gand se visite à pieds. De cette ville, on a tous les trois ressenti de très bonnes ondes. Il Faudra que je m’y programme un week-end complet.
Gand est une ville portuaire du nord-ouest de la Belgique, traversée par la Lys et l’Escaut. Qui dit eau, dit canaux, et Gand en a des canaux ce qui lui donne un air d’Amsterdam-Venise, une invitation à des balades bucoliques et romantiques pour un agréable week-end d’évasion.
Gand est médiévale mais également moderne. C’est cette particularité qui fait à mon sens son charme.
Le château des Comtes, situé en plein centre-ville, donne le ton. Faute de temps, je n’ai pas pu le visiter. Mais imaginez-vous un château fort en plein milieu d’une ville. Le décor est planté ! Cette forteresse du 12e siècle est le symbole historique de Gand. Visite conseillée pour s’imprégner de l’atmosphère de l’époque, au programme : le corps de garde, les remparts, le donjon, la résidence des comtes et les écuries.
Le beffroi vaut aussi le détour, surtout pour sa vue panoramique. Il est classé au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. Vous l’escaladez par les marches (attention l’escalier est exigu) ou prenez l’ascenseur à partir du premier étage. Pour ma part, j’ai pris l’ascenseur pour monter mais je suis redescendu par les marches. On peut à peine se croiser dans cet escalier…les rires seront au rendez-vous à la moindre rencontre. Vous entendrez son carillon avec un peu de chance. A visiter aussi l’ancien béguinage Sainte-Elisabeth, véritable village intégré dans la ville avec son église orthodoxe décorée, intérieurement de fresques peintes à la façon byzantine (quelle culture ! ;-)) et extérieurement de mosaïques. La Cathédrale Saint-Bavon est à positionner aussi dans votre citytrip, caractérisée par son style roman et gothique, symbole de l’histoire contradictoire de la ville de Gand. Sans oublier les musées, d’art ancien (psychiatrie, passé industriel de la ville,…) et d’art contemporain-moderne, le S.M.A.K notamment avec ses expositions de premier plan. A faire absolument lors d’un futur week-end ;-).
La modernité de la ville s’incarne dans la Werrengarenstraatje, la « ruelle aux graffitis », véritable lieu d’expression pour les street-artistes. De vieilles bâtisses côtoient des bâtiments plus actuels, transportant le voyageur à travers les époques. Gand est aussi une ville très dynamique : le festival de la lumière organisé tous les 3 ans vous éblouira. Lors de mon passage en mai se tenait le festival des food trucks, permettant de découvrir la street food conviviale et gustative. J’aime bien les voitures et je me suis régalé aussi avec les camions qui, pour certains, étaient de véritables pièces de musées.
« Le centre artistique Vooruit, qui comprend un café art déco, est, depuis 100 ans, un monument en soi et propose un vaste programme d’arts du spectacle et de musique. » Depuis 2009, Gand est « ville créative de musique », distinction honorifique décernée par l’UNESCO. « La scène musicale gantoise est riche et diverse. Gand est une authentique ville de festivals, dont plusieurs sont de niveau international. À l’image des dix jours des Fêtes de Gand en juillet. Du prestigieux Festival de Flandre Gand, l’un des plus grands festivals de musique classique en Europe. Du Gent Jazz Festival, qui propose un incroyable répertoire de musiciens internationaux tout en laissant la place à une déferlante de jeunes talents. Mais aussi du Festival international du film de Gand, le seul au monde à faire la part belle à la musique de film. Et Gand accueille également le siège de l’European Festival Association et celui de l’association des festivals de musique en Flandre. » A Gand, on ne s’ennuiera pas musicalement. Musique classique, Jazz, musique électronique. Je suppose en outre qu’il doit y avoir de bonnes boites ;-).
Vous êtes gourmands ? Gand ravira aussi vos papilles avec une multitude de bons restaurants, végétariens, gastronomiques, spécialités locales, et de bonnes bières, je vous conseille la Saint-Augustin que j’ai dégustée dans un bar avec vue sur le château des Comtes.
En Belgique, il n’y a pas que Bruxelles ou Bruges, il faut aussi compter sur Gand, à découvrir le temps d’un week-end.

I discovered Ghent during an afternoon. I drove there with my father and my partner. Ghent is served by the motorway, it’s easy to access and do not forget, no toll in Belgium. To park, do not aim downtown, but park on the outskirts, it will be easier and free. A little walk, it does not hurt, especially that Ghent visit on foot. From this city, all three felt very good waves. I’ll have to plan a full weekend there.
Ghent is a port city in northwestern Belgium, crossed by the Lys and Scheldt rivers. Who says water, says channels, and Ghent has channels that gives it an air of Amsterdam-Venice, an invitation to bucolic and romantic walks for a pleasant weekend break.
Ghent is medieval but also modern. It is this particularity which makes in my sense its charm.
The castle of the Counts, located in the city center, sets the tone. For lack of time, I could not visit it. But imagine a castle in the middle of a city. The stage is set ! This fortress of the 12th century is the historical symbol of Ghent. Visit advised to soak up the atmosphere of the time, the program: the guardhouse, the ramparts, the dungeon, the residence of the counts and stables.
The belfry is also worth seeing, especially for its panoramic view. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You climb it up the steps (be careful the stairs are cramped) or take the elevator from the first floor. For my part, I took the elevator to go up but I went down the steps. We can barely cross each other on this staircase … the laughs will be at the rendezvous at the slightest meeting. You will hear his chime with a little luck. To visit also the old beguinage Sainte-Elisabeth, true village integrated in the city with its Orthodox church decorated, internally of frescoes painted with the Byzantine way (what culture! ;-)) and externally of mosaics. St. Bavo’s Cathedral is also positioned in your citytrip, characterized by its Romanesque and Gothic style, symbol of the contradictory history of the city of Ghent. Not to mention the museums, old art (psychiatry, industrial past of the city, …) and contemporary-modern art, the S.M.A.K including with its leading exhibitions. To do absolutely during a future weekend ;-).

Old buildings alongside more current buildings, transporting the traveler through the ages. Ghent is also a very dynamic city: the festival of light organized every 3 years will dazzle you. During my visit in May was held the festival of food trucks, to discover the friendly and tasty street food. I like cars and I also enjoyed the trucks which, for some, were real pieces of museums.

From the Gent Jazz Festival, which offers an incredible repertoire of international musicians while leaving room for a surge of young talents. You are greedy? Ghent will also delight your taste buds with a multitude of good restaurants, vegetarian, gastronomic, local specialties, and good beers, I recommend the St. Augustine I tasted in a bar overlooking the castle of the Counts.
In Belgium, there is not only Brussels or Bruges, we must also rely on Ghent, to discover the time of a weekend.
